Creating Accessible Web Pages

Here are four easy ways to help make your Woodring web page more accessible, so people using alternative technologies (like screen readers) can successfully use your site.

Reminder: As a public institution we are required by law to provide equal access to programs and services for our entire community, including those with disabilities.

Instructions

1) Each image needs to have Alternative Text

  1. Click Edit Page, navigate to your page, then click the New Draft tab to edit your page
  2. Right-click on an image and select Image Properties
  3. Fill in the Alternative Text (type in text that describes the image to someone who can’t see it)

  4. Click OK, then Save and Publish the page

2) Each hyperlink needs to have meaningful text

  1. Right: contact Technology Services
  2. Wrong: click here to contact Technology Services
  3. Right: see the Woodring Faculty and Staff Directory
  4. Wrong: see https://wce.wwu.edu/files/Directory.pdf for Woodring Faculty and Staff

3) Use section headings appropriately instead of bold and large fonts

  1. Use Heading 2 for section headings, Heading 3 for subheadings, Heading 4 for sub-subheadings, etc.

4) Use Bulleted or Ordered Lists when you list things instead of just indenting or using blank separator lines.

Use the Drupal Woodring template the way it was designed, don’t add your own colors and fonts.
