Purpose

This section contains general procedures and tools that will be used in the management of MacOS devices.
MacOS Recovery Menu
Firmware Password Removal:
If prompted for a firmware password, contact Benjamin Hoekstra (hoekstb2@wwu.edu) or James DeWine (dewinej@wwu.edu) to disable the password in the Firmware Password Utility.
Macs with Apple Silicon
Shutdown the device
Press and Hold the Power button
Select Options and click Continue
Macs with Intel CPUs
Power on the device and enter recovery mode by choosing one of the following options:
Command-R: Recovery will offer the current version of the most recently installed macOS.
Option-Command-R: Recovery offers the latest macOS compatible with the device.
Shift-Option-Command-R: Recovery offers the macOS version that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.
Other Startup Shortcuts
The following shortcuts can be used when Powering on the device:
Option-Command-P-R: Clears NVRAM settings, which is useful for resolving unusual boot behavior.
Hold-Down Option (with Bootable USB): Use a USB installer drive by holding down the Option key at startup to choose the bootable media.
