Supported Email & Calendar Applications

On September 1, 2020, only email and calendar apps that support modern authentication methods will be able to connect to your WWU mailbox and calendar. When this change occurs, it may be necessary to remove your WWU account and add it again for some apps like the Outlook mobile app.

Supported email and calendar applications include the following:

  • Current Outlook desktop applications for Windows and macOS

  • Current versions of the Outlook app for iOS and Android

    • Available for free from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store

  • The Outlook Web App on current web browsers

    • Up to date versions of any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on any operating system (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, ChromeOS, Linux)

While not supported, the following may also work:

  • Apple Mail and Calendar apps for macOS 10.14 and higher, iOS 13.x and higher

  • 3rd party mail and calendar apps that support Microsoft’s latest protocols and modern authentication

The following applications are not supported and will no longer be able to connect to your WWU email and calendar some time in 2020:

  • Email applications that use older protocols like ActiveSync, IMAP, MAPI, SMTP, and POP3

  • Apple Mail and Calendar apps for older versions of macOS and iOS

  • Older Web browsers like Internet Explorer 10

Frequently asked questions about the authentication requirement change on September 1, 2020

Starting September 1, email applications must use modern authentication to connect to WWU mailboxes. Applications that use basic authentication will no longer connect.

What’s the difference between Modern Authentication and Basic Authentication?

  • Modern Authentication is a means of identity management that is built with additional security factors.

  • Basic Authentication requests only a username and password and is not compatible with Multi-factor Authentication.

How do I know if I’m using a version of Outlook that support Modern Authentication?
Microsoft’s instructions for checking your Outlook version.
Get the latest version of Outlook and other Microsoft 365 apps for all of your devices

  • Windows computers should be running Outlook for Office 365 (not Outlook for Office 2016, 2013, or 2010)

  • macOS computers should be running Outlook version 16.3x or higher (not Outlook 2011)

  • Mobile devices should be on version 4 or higher

Why can’t I connect to my Western email even though I have the current Outlook mobile app installed?
If your Outlook mobile app stops connecting on or after September 1st: In most cases, your problem will be resolved by resetting or deleting your mailbox from your mobile app and reattaching it. You can find the Settings (gear icon) on your Outlook mobile app by tapping your Inbox in the upper left corner to access your list of accounts and folders. Tap the gear icon to enter settings and then tap your username@wwu.edu mail account. Scroll to the bottom and try the Reset Account option first. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, tap Delete Account and then add it again.

Why can’t I connect to shared mailboxes now?
If you are no longer able to access a previously added shared mailbox, it is likely because it was added to Outlook as a separate account that you authenticate to. It may be necessary to remove the account from your Outlook settings and add the account again. You can also add shared mailboxes as additional mailboxes to open under your primary account. See Microsoft’s instructions for adding a shared mailbox.

Which Outlook app should I use?
There are Outlook apps for Windows, Mac, and mobile, and there is also Outlook on the web (formerly called Outlook Web App or OWA). Here’s a comparison of features.
