ES318 Lab Overview and Equipment Guide

Introduction

The ES318 Graduate Lab, located in the College of the Environment, is managed by Nick Zaferatos, James Miller, Tammi Laninga, and Nabil Kamel. This lab serves students in the Urban and Environmental Planning and Policy (UEPP) program. Plans are underway for a major overhaul of the lab in summer 2025 to enhance functionality and usability.

This document provides an overview of the lab's hardware and software requirements to ensure smooth operation of the equipment.


Hardware Overview

Lab Computers

20 Dell OptiPlex 7470 All-in-One (AIO) desktops: Used for general lab activities.
1 Podium Computer 7010 - Small form factor system
2 Dell Precision 3680 Workstations: Designed for high-performance tasks, these systems are dedicated to graduate students for advanced software use. Specs: Powerful I9 systems with 64 GB of RAM, RTX 5000 GPU

Printer

HP LaserJet M601:

  • Managed via Group Policy and associated with the lab computers.

  • Accessible for printing from any workstation in the lab.


Software Overview

Core Software Installed on Lab Computers:

  • SPSS: A statistical analysis tool widely used for research (licensed software).

  • GIS Software: Geographic Information Systems tools for spatial analysis and mapping.

  •  

Specialized Licenses

  • SketchUp: A 3D modeling software for design and visualization, commonly used in architecture, engineering, and construction (licensed software).

  • Adobe Creative Cloud: A suite of graphic design, video editing, and digital media tools, including Photoshop and Illustrator, used for creating and enhancing GIS visualizations and presentations (licensed software).


Future Enhancements

Planned improvements for summer 2025 include:

  • Upgraded hardware for desktops and workstations.

  • Enhanced software offerings to support evolving academic needs.

  • Improved room layout for better accessibility and usability.
